2nd European Mandolin Academy

Venue: Bundesakademie Trossingen, Germany

Date: 7th- 11th November 2011

The 2nd European Mandolin Academy took place from the 7th- 11th November 2011 in the Federal Academy for Youth Education Trossingen, Germany.

The Academy served as a platform for musicians from both the “classical” and the “popular” music scene to meet and exchange ideas.

Course Contents which were covered:

  • Basics of Blues & Bluegrass
  • Chord Theory
  • Rhythm
  • Chord symbols
  • The characteristics of styles, for example: Jazz, Swing, Bebop or Choro
  • Theoretical studies of improvisation or chord changes
  • Percussion
  • Break down
  • Arranging
  • The theory of basso continuo and its relationship of the notation of pop music (basso continuo meets pop)
  • Forum lessons
  • Ensemble
  • Mandolin techniques of the 18th century and their transfer to popular music
  • Lectures
  • Forum discussions with the tutors
  • Concerts

 Course Tutors

 The following internationally acclaimed musicians will take part

  • Mike Marshall (mandolin/ guitar/fiddle) from San Fransisco (USA)
  • Don Stiernberg (mandolin/guitar) Chicago (USA)
  • Mirko Schrader (guitar/ ensemble) from Germany
  • Caterina Lichtenberg (mandolin/artistic director) from Germany. Caterina Lichtenberg is Professor for mandolin at the University of Cologne and has had a long established working relationship with the American mandolin scene and has tutored in the USA on many occasions
